THE HOUSE, THE GARDENS, THE MUSEUM

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) interprets the art, history, and culture of the great valley for which it is named. This regional museum complex in Winchester, Virginia, includes a historic house dating to the eighteenth century, six acres of spectacular gardens, and a museum designed by internationally recognized architect Michael Graves.

You could easily spend the better part of a day at this museum site. Plan for about 45 minutes to tour the historic house, at least an hour to explore the six acres of gardens on your own, and another hour or so in the museum galleries. One good approach is to experience the house and gardens in the morning, have lunch in the Museum Tea Room, and see the galleries in the afternoon. Or vice versa. The Museum Tea Room is also a good place for afternoon tea. Don't miss the Museum Store during your visit.

The museum is open year-round, and the house and gardens are open March through November. All are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday; closed Mondays and major holidays. Click here for details about upcoming holiday closings.

CDIA Practicum Gives Students Real-World Experience Sep 30

At CDIA, they believe it is essential to provide students with hands-on experience with real-world clients. They also believe that it is important to make a positive impact in the community. These ideologies come together to create our Practicum program philosophy and here's one example:

The Pregnancy Aid Center (PAC), is not new to the non-profit world. Established in 1974, PAC provides pre- and post- natal care for low-income mothers. Their website was created by an intern over 10 years ago, and remained static with basic information about services offered. Mary Jelacic, executive director of PAC, talks about the effect of an underdeveloped site. “Grantors who looked at our website were less likely to consider us…unless they actually took time to do a site visit. Prospective patients did not get their FAQs answered unless they called the Center”. Ms. Jelacic’s observations are supported by a 2009 report from the Philanthropy News Digest, which noted “highly satisfied nonprofit website visitors are 49% more likely to donate money…[and] 38% more likely to volunteer”, while 30% “chose not to give online because of poor website functionality.”
PAC partnered with CDIA for a Practicum web redesign and photo project. The first client meeting involved the web team, photographer and Mary, and from this meeting, a plan developed to create photos and a site that was warm and welcoming for PAC constituents. Mary handed creative direction to the CDIA team, and took her role as “a great partner: astute, focused, responsive, caring and compassionate.” The site had few requirements for the redesign: accessible to a low-literacy group; translated in both Spanish and English; extendable to additional languages.
Pol Klein (http://www.polklein.com/) of the web team notes, “The challenge of an open-ended requirement is latching on to a direction. When you can go in any direction, which way do you face?” The direction was one that steered away from text-heavy content, and used visuals to increase the ease of navigation and comprehension. Pol offers an insight about the redesign process: “We chose a package of technologies and approaches that would play well on older computers. With this direction in mind, we established three visual designs; one with a photo collage navigation on the home page and two with photo series on the home page. The Pregnancy Aid Center chose the photo collage navigation design and we got on to building. To ensure that additional languages could be added and that team members could work on the site at the same time (given the relatively short schedule), we chose to build the site with XHTML, CSS, and server side included templates and a folder structure that clearly separated language specific content for language additions. A key part of building the site was user and browser testing. CDIA organized user interface testing with volunteers the whole class could observe over a video link. It was rather effective as users identified aspects of the design that worked well and that didn’t for them; not always in ways we expected. With user feedback and browser test results in, we made modifications, finalized the content of the site and published a beta version for the Pregnancy Aid Center to review. Finally with their feedback, we made final modifications, special pages for errors, and plugged in video content all for a final delivery.”
Katharine Hauschka (http://www.katehaus.com/) worked as photographer on the project; an important role in a redesign the depended on visuals. Following the initial meeting, Katharine set up shop at the clinic, working to capture a welcoming environment, images that would work both as stand-alones and as part of the website. Some of her biggest challenges came in the nature of the clinic—not only was she documenting clinical experiences (private in nature), but also was navigating model releases with clients who often did not speak English. However, with the support of the clinic and Mary, she was able to successfully document PAC, and provide the web team with the appropriate images. Additionally, Katharine utilized CDIA video and sound equipment to create a multimedia piece also featured on the site.
The results are easily measured - soon after the site launch,http://www.pregnancyaidcenter.com/, PAC was awarded a $300,000 grant for their programs. Says Mary, “The new site serves as an education tool for consumers, donors and volunteers. After reading the information on the website clients know what services they qualify for as well as which documents are needed to enroll in Medicaid and WIC, etc. Volunteers learn about opportunities to help others at PAC. Donors learn about services that they are supporting. Everyone who has looked at the site has been amazed at the wealth of information it provides and the beautiful photos and informative video. Teens love the interactive features and the bold colors. Funders have made positive comments about our new website.”
For CDIA students, the experience also had a tremendous effect. In addition to the stunning portfolio piece, Katharine comments about the intrinsic value of Practicum: “It was absolutely inspiring working with Mary and the staff members at the PAC as each of them wakes up every day and goes to work to help these people in need who wouldn't have a place to go for help without the PAC. To be able to go and photograph these people at work and to help them in their cause was an inspiration! I'd happily help them out again with anything in the future.”

I’ve never been one of those girls who gets and silly and weird about babies (I find kids ages 2-7 to be much more entertaining), but I have to admit that these photos are adorable. Nebraska photographer Tracy Raver appeared on the TODAY show this morning to talk about her work, which consists of sleeping newborns (usually just around 2 weeks old).

Tracy says the babies are “naturally very sleepy,” making them pretty easy to work with as subjects. “What we try to work towards is natural curly positions like they would be in the womb,” she said. “They will bend very easily, and when they’re sound asleep you can do just about anything to them.”

Still, she says the environment in the studio is very important for the babies’ comfort. “The babies have to be very very warm, so we crank it up to about 85 degrees,” she said. “And we ask the moms that they have their bellies nice and full before they leave so that the drive to the studio gets them nice and sleepy in the car.”

Tracy uses props like hats and slings, though she says she likes to do something different with each kid and doesn’t really plan it ahead of time. “We kind of just read the baby,” she said. “Little girls tend to be a little bit feistier, so we have to work a little bit harder with them.”

M & D Get Married!

Well it was not the most beautiful of days, but the weather held out for a cool but lovely outdoor ceremony overlooking the Chesapeak bay. As the guests made their way over to the reception site, the sun broke through the grey sheet of clouds for a little more light for the group photographs. Despite the clouds, M & D had a wonderful time and kicked off the dancing with an awesome routine to Björk's "It's oh so Quiet" (in honor of their honeymoon to Iceland) which may have been the best first dance routine I've seen this summer...maybe ever! Needless to say, it was a great wedding! Enjoy the sneak peeks!

E & I Wedding

Words can not describe the awesome energy that existed at this wedding! From the Bride to the Groom and everyone and everything in between the day was phenomenal! The weather was perfectly warm with a slight breeze and the light, majestic! The venue, the WVSA Arts Connection, was an authentic and unique place with an absolutely awesome sheltered rooftop room that proved the perfect place to dance the night away after a lovely ceremony. Between all the getting ready and the party, I had a chance to take the bus with the fabulously enormous wedding party (16 brides maids and 16 groomsmen) over to the Jefferson memorial where we took a few photos- before needing to leave due to lack of a permit (woops!- that'll never happen again!) We still got some fun and great shots and had a blast! We got held up by the Kennedy processional on the way home and had to go around the city to get back to the venue but we made it in time for the Bride and Groom to have a bite to eat before speeches, the cupcake cutting and the first dance. The wedding wound down with some fabulous dancing and singing to boot! It was an honor to have the chance to photograph these folks! So I hope you enjoy the photos!

He was her scuba instructor, she was learning the ways of scuba- it was a match made in heaven! Despite a non lovely day, there was an absolutely lovely wedding happening in Virginia! Though we had plans and a permit to head down to the Lincoln Memorial to snap some shots of the couple who has a special tie to Lincoln, the weather just didn't let up at the right time for us to go. So we explored the hotel and came up with some fun and interesting portraits :) The wedding was held in the Galaxy ballroom at the Shearton in VA which overlooks the airforce memorial, and DC so once the sun had set (secretly-while it hid behind the thick layer of rain clouds) and the reception had started, we had a grand landscape view of city lights....it was a fun, sweet evening! Not only were the bride and groom a fun couple to work with but the bride had also worked hard all year on do it yourself projects to create such wonderful details so enjoy the photos and details- I know I had a great time working :)

At 18 months, as you will see below, this little boy has quite a head of hair, the most charming smile and a sweet, playful personality. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to photograph little Sebastian while he was playing with his mom. Carolina, his mom, got a great work out while playing with him! When I arrived at their house, Sebastian wasn't sure what to think of me, and after an hour or so he was giving me hugs and showing off. Apparently once I left and he realized I wasn't coming back he began to cry! I hope to have he opportunity to photograph him again soon!

Oh My Goff, better known as Angie Goff, is the W*USA traffic anchor. She also happens to be the coolest TV personality we’ve ever run across. A George Mason grad, Angie rejoined W*USA team after a stint as an intern back in 2001.

Angie has also been honored with an Emmy for her work at WIS-TV in Columbia, SC and was a top production assistant on the show Entertainment Tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen … you may never look at Washington, D.C. traffic the same way ever again.

Famous 5 Questions: Oh My Goff

1) Do people ever tell you that you look like Vanessa Minnillo?

I’ve gotten it before along with Lindsay Price. Hey and I’ll take it– this after once being told my smile/laugh favored Roseanne Barr. Oh High School… so cruel, so cruel.

2) Michelle Obama calls tomorrow and wants to head out for the evening in DC. Where are you going?

3) Stopped traffic makes news for your morning. What’s the funniest traffic story you’ve heard from inside-the-beltway?

I’ve managed to maintain my composure when a tractor trailer carrying hundreds of pounds of shrimp overturned on the beltway and a disabled Krispy Kreme truck had police on the scene… but honestly the one time I almost lost it on air was when I had to report a Silver Spring accident on Kilkenny Street. All I could think of is "You bastards!" and then there were rats.

4) What is your favorite Michael Jackson song? Why?

"Bad" no question.

Here Comes the Boom! How to Shoot Fireworks at Weddings

Tips and Tricks for shooting fireworks!

Tomorrow is one of those rare days where cool holidays and weddings collide. Bad news is that if you’re working your not getting to spend the day with your friends and family. The good news is FIREWORKS at your wedding HOT DAMN!

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you get those awesome fireworks shots tomorrow.

Bring a tripod! This is really a must as you’ll be shooting some long exposures and the delicate lines of some fireworks are easy to blur handheld at slow speeds. If you don’t have a tripod improvise a camera rest and use the built in timer.
Bring a video light. If you want to light a couple in the foreground of your photo a video light (or even an unmounted manually popped flash) will allow you more control during the long exposure.
Bring a flash light. You’ll need it to poke around your bag and set your gear.
Focus at infinity (and turn off auto focus). How do you focus in the dark on something that is not there yet? Most likely you’ll be at a great enough distance that setting your lens to manual and setting the focal length to infinity should work.
Shutter speed controls the trails. Exposures on fireworks run the range of 2-15 seconds in general. The slower your shutter speed the longer the trails. If your camera has a bulb mode use it. Being careful to not induce shake into your shot. Otherwise start with a 2-4 second exposure and adjust to taste remembering: Slower = longer trails & Faster = shorter trails.
Picking an ISO. Generally speaking use a low ISO, myself I like to shoot at ISO 100 or ISO 50 if the camera allows but never faster than ISO 200. Start at f/8 or f/11 adjusting as necessary but you probably won’t need to unless you’re photos are lacking color in which case you’ll close down the lens a bit more to bring it back. . Most of the tweaking will be with your shutter speed.
Consider your foreground. Without an object in the foreground fireworks are just color in a black abyss. Adding a foreground object gives your photo depth that it would otherwise lack.
Try manual multiple exposures. If you really want to get funky, lock your shutter open and cover your lens with something dark. Uncovering it only for the bursts. You can get some pretty funky multi burst frames this way.
Shoot RAW! but try a daylight white balance. Film photographers almost always shoot fireworks with daylight balanced film for the extra saturation and color.
Meter of the buildings. You can test your settings to a certain degree by metering off buildings or structures in the distance before the fireworks start to go off. Chances are if the buildings look good the fireworks will too.
Load an empty card. Be sure to load an empty card before the booming begins as you’ll be taking lots of exposures and you don’t want to be messing with anything other than your exposure.

So the day was a little gloomy until the afternoon came around and the wedding commenced, however the wedding was held inside in the beautiful new Marriott Hotel in Bethesda. It was a beautiful wedding with lots of fun details and photo ops. The bride and Groom wanted to make sure we got a ton of photos of the two of them so before it was way too dark, we headed outside and got some neat shots (check out the ones at the end). Enjoy!

Hosted by The Dunes, LLC., DC This Week and Senate Realty, Art Buzz is designed to showcase the works of DC's top artists and actively raise funds for the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative's Arts for Every Student (AFES) program.

AFES provides DC public and chartered schools with access to cultural opportunities throughout the Washington metropolitan area. The DC Collaborative ensures that underserved DC public schools benefit from the region's rich array of arts amenities. They provide free transportation and free tickets to music,dance, and theater experiences; plus trips to The Kennedy Center and museums.

In addition the Collaborative provides teachers with professional development sessions and study materials, adding further incentive to integrate the arts into their daily lessons. In the 2008 school year, more than 32,000 students and teachers visited cultural institutions through AFES.

What an Awesome night! A prom theme partay held for Nashville’s Country Marathon runners of Team Leukemia and Lymphoma. At the CDIA we have been working hard on finishing up our certificate with the practicum. It is our last project before we move forward into the 'big world of photography' if we aren't there already...Anyway the Practicum focuses on having us work with non-profit organizations in order to help them build a better portfolio of photographs for different uses. Sorry it's been a while since the last post! Other than being on break, I've been busy working on this week's assignment of a photo story. I've got two running at the moment, one is about the opening of Bethesda's South Street Steaks- the absolute BEST place place to get a Philly Cheese Steak outside of Philly! And the other is about Steve Hauschka, the new place kicker for the Baltimore Ravens-and also my brother ;)

Those slideshows will all be finished in a couple weeks as we learn in class the ins and outs of final cut and fun programs like that. In the mean time here are some photos of the kicker extraordinaire with his new little puppy Jack from break in MA:

Relaxing & Reviving

Well being home in the 'Ham' has allowed me to take advantage of the opportunity to photograph little kids. I had the great opportunity to photograph my friend's little girl today so keep posted for some photos of her next week!

In other news, I've just had a great time chilling out here at the 'rents' house and catching up with old foodie friends and family. Though the weather has been pretty awful, it's given me a chance to just hang out, relax and play with my new photo equipment. I'm feeling quite refreshed in a great way and looking forward to heading back to DC and getting back to the young thriving life. There's something about visiting home that just makes me live like a retired 60 year old who doesn't have much to do. Anyway, I've got a couple gigs coming up that will be in the papers and I'll be sure to keep you posted!

I'm spending the break in Beantown catching up with the fam and I'm missing out on the beautiful weather they're having in DC...Not fair! None the less I did get some amazing new camera equipment and have been playing with it during my free time. It's AWESOME!!! I got the new Canon 5D Mark 2 and a couple new lenses...so regardless of my spring break having dreary weather and snow, it's still awesome!

Ok so if anyone has ever had the chance to experience a stay at an Oberoi you are a privledged person...Now I stayed in several of them while I was lucky enough to partake in an alum trip to India with The president of the Colorado College and former US Ambassador to India, Dick Celeste. Every Oberoi we stayed in would have this video playing in the room when you walked in. It is this amazing video that is just so mezmorizing with stunning videography and an incredible song...Anyway, with the weather we've been having lately here in the city, i've been dreaming about warm places and thought about this video...watching it just makes me feel like I'm on vacation!

Amish Cinnamon Bread

Cooking is certainly another artistic outlet of mine. I went to culinary school and try to keep up the cooking skills I learned as much as I can while living the busy photographer lifestyle. One of the very delicious and special recipes I have come across is this Amish Cinnamon Bread... The catch is though that you can't make it from scratch, you have to get the starter from a friend. Then you mush the bag over a period of 10 days and add some ingredients, make 4 new starter kits and bake your bread! It's so so so so good! I'll be making mine on friday :) Can't wait for the delicious moist goodness that is on its way!!!

SNOW in the City!

Wow! March certainly does come in like a lion...and will hopefully go out like a lamb. What a beautiful present to wake up to 4 inches of fresh white powder blanketing the city! I feel like I'm back home in Vail and I should throw on my snow pants and skis and hit the slopes! I'm gonna go make some snow angles outside and maybe take some pics of the snow-covered city, but in honor of my Colorado home, here are some videos to watch while you cuddle up with your snuggie or slanket to stay warm ;)

Turning 27 today and I'm excited about it! Another year older, and supposedly another year wiser...right? Check it out I was born at 8:08 pm on 02/28/82 and I was 8 pounds 2 ounces. Anyway! I'll be celebrating "Hauschkafest" with my peeps here in the big city of DC...Hauschkafest originates from back in College when my roommate at the time decided that one day of celebration wasn't enough so we spread it out over a week. It's been downsized to a three day weekend now which is, I think the perfect amount of time!
We went bowling last night and tonight we'll be tasting and critiquing wines thanks to a lovely friend of mine who offered to teach us a lil something about crushed and fermented grapes. Sunday will be filled with brunch and relaxation! Yaaayyyyy!

I captured it a few years ago while I was a snowshoe guide and Naturalist in the Vail Valley. It was my day off so I went snowshoeing on one of my favorite little trails at Maloit Park in Minturn, CO after a fresh snowfall as the sun was sinking below the rockies. I can still remember the great moment...so serene...and marvelous...
